Cleveland’s MLB team to change name to Guardians

Cleveland, Ohio’s MLB team will be dropping the Indians name and logo after the 2021 season, the team announced on Friday. I think this should’ve happened a long time ago. The Indians name is racist.

Famous actor and Indians fan Tom Hanks was the narrator for the Twitter video the Indians posted announcing the change. In the press conference the Indians held, owner Paul Dolan said, “As a fifth-generational Clevelander, I understand the historic impact and importance of this decision.” I understand too. The new logo and the name, Guardians are inspired by the Hope Memorial Bridge, which leads to Progressive Field,  Cleveland’s home field. It is home to giant stone statues known as the Guardians of Traffic. The team’s new logo will feature a letter G with wings attached surrounding a baseball. The typeface they’ll use to spell out their name on the jersey will be more angular than the one they use now. The team’s colors, which are red, white and navy, will remain the same.

If you remember, the Washington Redskins ditched their name and logo and went as the Washington Football Team in 2020. Many people including myself thought their name and logo were racist as well.
