On Thursday, August 12, the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees played a game in a cornfield in Dyersville, Iowa. Why, you might ask, is this important? The cornfield is near the site where the 1989 movie “Field of Dreams” was filmed. “Field of Dreams” is a movie about a man who owns a corn field and turns it into a baseball diamond. The MLB thought it would be a good idea to play a game in Iowa. Turns out it was. The baseball video game, “MLB The Show 21” has had stuff related to the game, including the stadium itself. “MLB The Show 21” has packs you can open. Normally, you just win packs as a reward. In this case you have to earn them. Before the game began, Kevin Costner, the star of the movie “Field of Dreams”, walked out from out of the corn and the players did the same. White Sox manager Tony La Russa missed the game due to a family member’s funeral. Taking his place was Miguel Cairo.
White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu hit the first of many home runs in the game. His teammates Eloy Jimenez and Seby Zavala hit homers as well. The White Sox wore their 1919 uniforms.The The Yankees, Aaron Judge, hit a three-run shot and Brett Gardner hit a solo homer.
Entering the 9th inning, the White Sox led 7-4. But, Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run home run for New York to cut Chicago’s lead to 7-6. Then, Judge hit his second homer of the evening to give the Yankees the lead, 8-7. But, in the bottom of the 9th, Sox shortstop Tim Anderson hit a two-run walkoff home run to right field to win it for Chicago, 9-8.
“The fans came to see a show, and we gave them a show.” Anderson said after the game. This was the most-watched regular season game in 16 years, as 5.9 million people tuned in to watch. It was also the most-watched game by teenagers in a decade and the most-watched by women since 1998. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said that the “Field of Dreams” game will come back in 2022.
