The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20, in Super Bowl 56. This was their 2nd Super Bowl win in franchise history, and first in Los Angeles. The game was played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the second time ever that a team played a Super Bowl on their home turf.
The first was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. I predicted a Rams win in my preview of the game, despite rooting for the Bengals. The Rams made a stop on fourth down by star defensive tackle Aaron Donald. After the game, Donald said through tears, “I’m just so happy, I wanted this so bad. I dreamed this, man. I dreamed this and it’s,like, surreal. It’s the best feeling in the world. God is great.”
The Rams jumped out to an early lead. Odell Beckham Jr. and Cooper Kupp scored the first two touchdowns of the game. The Bengals answered back with a touchdown off a trick play. Beckham left the game with a possible ACL tear in the second quarter. The Rams lead 13-10 at halftime, but the Bengals scored a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, although Tee Higgins clearly grabbed the facemask of Jalen Ramsey. 10 seconds later, the Bengals got an interception off quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Bengals kicked a field goal to go up 20-13 after three quarters of play. In the fourth quarter, the Rams kicked a field goal of their own. The game came down to the final two minutes. Kupp scored a huge touchdown after a 15-play drive, giving LA the lead. The Bengals had a chance to at least send the game to overtime, but they couldn’t, meaning the Rams were Super Bowl champions.
Cooper Kupp was named MVP of the game, with eight catches, 92 yards, and two touchdowns. This isn’t the first time that a Los Angeles team has won a championship recently. In 2020, the Lakers and Dodgers won the NBA Finals and World Series, respectively.
