Saint Peter’s Defeats Purdue to Advance to Elite Eight

The Saint Peter’s men’s basketball team pulled off their third big upset of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, beating the Purdue Boilermakers 67-64 on Friday. They are a #15 seed in the East Region and had already beaten #2 Kentucky and #7 Murray State. One year ago, 15-seeded Oral Roberts University shocked the world by beating Ohio State and Florida. Only difference is, the Peacocks advanced to the Elite Eight while the Golden Eagles fell in the Sweet 16.

In the Elite Eight, Saint Peters will face off against #8 North Carolina Tar Heels. In the Sweet 16, Purdue guard Jaden Ivey hit a huge three-pointer to make the score 65-64 Peacocks. Purdue intentionally fouled Saint Peter’s guard Doug Edert (to try to get the ball back). Edert made both free throws to put Saint Peter’s ahead by 3. Ivey shot a last-ditch three to send the game into overtime, but it bounced off the rim, then the backboard, ending Purdue’s season. As soon as the final buzzer sounded, CBS play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle said on the air, “Jubilation in Jersey City.”

Personally, I find this really cool. No one gave Saint Peter’s a chance to win a game, let alone three. It’s amazing how Saint Peter’s wasn’t just happy to be there. Most 15-seeds would be that way. I really have a lot of respect for coach Shaheen Holloway because he is building a team that can battle and compete with other teams. I really wish them good luck in the Elite Eight.
