Baker Mayfield traded to Carolina Panthers

Baker Mayfield, former Cleveland Browns quarterback, has been traded to the Carolina Panthers for a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Panthers will split Mayfield’s salary with the Browns for the year. Cleveland will get $10.5 million while the Panthers will get $5 million.

I like this move. Mayfield didn’t want to play with Cleveland after they signed Deshaun Watson, and the Browns didn’t want to deal with him any longer. In terms of the actual move, I feel like the Browns could’ve gotten more out of this than a fifth-rounder in two years. But they got what they wanted out of him. Cleveland selected Mayfield with the first pick in the 2018 draft after they infamously went 0-16 the year before. He led them to their first win in over a year in his first ever appearance. Then he led them to the playoffs in 2020 and their first playoff victory in 16 years. He did great things for the Browns in his time in Cleveland.

Mayfield will be competing with Sam Darnold and Matt Corral for the starting job in Carolina. The Panthers’ Week 1 opponent will be the Browns. I am excited for that game.
