The company said higher food and fuel costs are “affecting customers’ ability to spend on general merchandise categories and requiring more markdowns to move through the inventory.” These layoffs that the company is doing won’t affect front-line workers, and they are part of a greater effort that Walmart hopes will create more jobs over time.
