Amazon, one of the biggest companies in the world, has decided to end its AmazonSmile program, which is a program that allows you to choose a charity, and the company will donate 0.5% of eligible items you buy to that charity. Amazon emailed people that take place in this program yesterday, saying the program that launched in 2013 “has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped.” This program will close down on February 20. Members of this program can pick among 1 million charities to donate to.
Amazon said AmazonSmile led to $449,385,192 dollars being donated to global charities, and $400 million dollars being donated to US charities. Amazon did not say if anything will replace this program, and it said it will “continue to pursue and invest in other areas where it can make meaningful change.” The company said it will also focus on natural disaster relief going forward.
