Merrick Garland has been confirmed as attorney general

The Senate has voted to confirm Merrick Garland as attorney general. He was confirmed with 70 Senators voting yes, and the other 30 voting no. He said that his first priority would be to punish the crimes that were committed in the US Capitol attack on January 6th. Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, called Garland a person with “integrity, independence, respect for the rule of law and credibility on both sides of the aisle.”

Garland now has politically charged questions, including if former President Donald Trump should be investigated by the Justice Department for his role in the Capitol attack, and what to do with the probe going on with President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. Hunter is being investigated for possibly violating tax and money-laundering laws i foreign countries.

In March 2016, Former President Barack Obama nominated Garland when a spot on the Supreme Court was open. During that time, Former Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell (now he is minority leader) and the Republicans blocked the nomination, saying that the next president that was elected should choose a judge. But, during that time, the next inauguration day was still 10 months away. But just a week before the 2020 election day, on October 26, they approved Trump’s choice, Amy Coney Barett.
