SpaceX, a company owned by Elon Musk, has gotten a $2.89 billion contract to build a crewed lunar lander for NASA. This will help create a system for helping humans to get to the moon in an easier way. SpaceX beat Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin company, and Dynetics, which is owned by the company Leidos. Last year, NASA gave out a total of $967 million to the three companies to start the lunar landers. SpaceX got the least amount of money, $135 million, and Dynetics and Blue Origin received $253 million and $579 million respectively. NASA was expected to choose 2 of the companies for the development, so the decision of only choosing SpaceX was a surprise.
SpaceX’s starship spacecraft have flown perfectly during test flights, but sometimes exploded when landing. This project is a part of a bigger mission of NASA, called Artemis to land astronauts on the moon by 2024.
