Chicago Blackhawks forward, Andrew Shaw, is retiring at age 29 due to concussions.

According to ESPN.com’s Emily Kaplan, Shaw, who played in the NHL for 10 seasons, said the team doctors “highly recommended” that he quit hockey. Shaw had two stints in the Windy City, where he won two Stanley Cups in 2013 and 2015, respectively.

He also played for the Montreal Canadiens for 3 years.

Shaw, who is known for his physical, gritty playing style, has suffered multiple head injuries, including one in November 2019 that ended his season.

He entered the new season feeling optimistic, but in a February game against the Dallas Stars, he was elbowed to the head and was diagnosed with another concussion.  The doctors said this was one concussion too many. They feared for Shaw’s well-being as it is difficult to recover from too many head injuries. The average NHL career lasts about 5 ½ years. Although Shaw will probably not make the Hall of Fame, he still had a productive career.

We wish you well in your new endeavors, Andrew. Good luck!
