The US government has recovered most of the money that was paid to the hackers of Colonial Pipeline – $2.3 million or 63.7 bitcoins to be exact. Colonial Pipeline is the biggest oil pipeline in the US, and so when the hackers hacked the pipeline, it caused gas shortages around the country. Colonial Pipeline paid about $4.3 million as ransom, in bitcoin. The hacking is thought to be done by a Russian hacking group named DarkSide. Colonial Pipeline said they paid the ransom because they did not know how long it would take for the pipeline to start working again. The pipeline gives 45% of all the oil used on the east coast.
