Zahid Quraishi, a Muslim American, has been confirmed as a federal judge by the Senate. This is big news because he is the first Muslim American to be confirmed as a federal judge. He was confirmed by a vote of 81 – 16, and he will be a judge for the District of New Jersey.
Quraishi was born in NYC, to Pakistani immigrants, and he was raised in New Jersey. He got his law degree at Rutgers law school, and he joined a law firm soon after in 2001. He later joined the military after the 9/11 attacks. After leaving the army, he worked for the Department of Homeland Security, and then the U.S attorney’s office in New Jersey. He became a US magistrate judge in 2019, which made him the first ever Asian American to serve on the federal bench in the state.
