A dormant volcano has erupted in Iceland

The Fagradals Mountain volcano, located in southwest Iceland, was dormant for over 6,000 years. On Friday night though, the volcano erupted. The eruption happened in Reykjanes Peninsula, and is the first of that area in 781 years. This eruption happened after many earthquakes in Iceland. In some videos of the eruption, there was bright lava coming out of the earth, and that lit the night sky. The brightness of the lava was able to be seen from up to 20 miles away!

Police in Iceland tweeted as a warning for people to stay indoors, so that they do not get impacted by gas pollution. Usually, when volcanoes erupt, many dangerous gases come out, like sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen fluoride, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. On Saturday morning, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said that there are high levels of volcanic gas near the volcano. Scientists and officials are studying the gases. The area of the lava is less than 1 square kilometer.
