A iceberg in Antarctica that is bigger than NYC has broken off

On Friday, February 26, an iceberg in Antarctica broke off. It is bigger than New York City, and is 490 sq. miles! It broke off in a natural process called calving where a rift opens up in the edge of a glacier, due to wind or water erosion, melting ice, or other events. Next, the glacier becomes unstable causing there to be cracks in the ice. That ultimately causes the iceberg to separate from the glacier.

This iceberg is in the Brunt Ice shelf in Antarctica, and is near a British scientific base. The base is closed currently, and the 12 people that work there left earlier this month.

Now, Scientists are carefully watching to see what the iceberg will do next. In 2017, an even bigger iceberg broke off. It was in the Larsen C ice shelf, and floated into the ocean last year.
