A new strain of coronavirus from the U.K. has been spreading rapidly throughout the US. This variant is called B.1.1.7, and is now the most dominant strain of coronavirus in the US. This is more contagious than the other one, and is more deadly. People are worried that this U.K. strain will cause many more cases again, even though the US is delivering around 3 million vaccines a day. Some other worries are that the current vaccines might not be able to protect people that well from these new variants.
Many more people in the 30’s or 40’s are going to hospitals now because they are very sick. Currently, 5,000 people per day are going to hospitals because of sickness, which is 2.7% more people than last week. The good news is that deaths have fallen by about 20%, because more elderly people are being vaccinated.
