Elizabeth Holmes was sentenced to over 11 years in prison due to her defrauding investors while running Theranos, a failed blood testing startup. The Judge, Edward Davila, sentenced Holmes to 11 years and 3 months of prison, along with 3 years of supervision once she is released. The lawyers for the government asked for her to receive a 15 year sentence, while her defense team pushed for a 9 year sentence. Holmes was once thought to be a tech industry icon for Theranos’ promise of testing for a wide variety of conditions with just a few drops of blood. The downfall of the company started in 2015, when a Wall Street Journal investigation found that the company has only performed a few of the tests it offered with its special testing device, and they relied on third-party manufactured devices from regular blood testing companies.
