Hawaii football legend Colt Brennan dies

Former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan passed away on May 10th, 2021. He was just 37 years old. He set records as the quarterback of the University of Hawaii football team from 2005 to 2007 before having a short NFL career. Brennan’s dad Terry Brennan confirmed his son’s death to the Hawaii Star-Advertiser. Terry also told ESPN that Colt had “ingested something laced with fentanyl and never regained consciousness.”

Colt went to junior college before coming to Hawaii in ‘05 and immediately became the starting QB. In 2006, Hawaii had 11 wins while Brennan threw for 5,549 yards, which is 7th in FBS history and 58 touchdowns, which was the FBS single-season record until 2019, when then- LSU signal-caller Joe Burrow had 60 TDs. The next year, he finished 3rd in Heisman trophy voting with 4,343 yards and 38 touchdowns. Brennan ended his college career with 14,193 passing yards and 131 passing touchdowns. He currently holds the 2nd spot in passing yards per game, No.5 in career passing scores and No.8 in career passing yards.

In the 2008 NFL Draft, Brennan was selected in the 6th round by the Washington Redskins (now Washington Football Team). He spent two years in Washington, then played a brief stint with the Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders. He then played arena football and played in the Canadian Football League. After he retired, Brennan had several run-ins with law enforcement, including being sent to prison multiple times for DUIs and once for burglary in 2005. He also had serious injuries, including traumatic brain damage, in a horrific car crash in 2010. Terry Brennan told ESPN that his son was “never the same” after the car accident.
