Meteor exploded powerfully over Vermont

On Saturday, March 7, a meteor exploded over Vermont. It happened in the night sky, and exploded with the force of 440 pounds of TNT! Scientists are estimating it was about 10 pounds, and was 6 inches in diameter.

The meteor came into the atmosphere at 42,000 mph according to NASA. It was seen in the northern part of Vermont, and exploded at 5:38 p.m EST (eastern standard time), which was right before sunset. Many people living in Vermont described it as a “loud boom and body-rattling vibration.”

NASA thinks the meteor appeared 52 miles over Mount Mansfield State Forest. It was just east of Burlington, Vermont’s largest city. Next, it travelled 33 miles toward the Canadian border, and finally disappeared at the ground south of the town of Newport.
