Miguel Cabrera Joins The 500 Home Run Club

On Sunday, August 22, 2021, Detroit Tigers first baseman,Miguel Cabrera, became the 28th player in MLB history to hit 500 career home runs. The Tigers were playing the Toronto Blue Jays on the road. Cabrera hit a ball over the center-field scoreboard off of pitcher Steven Matz. Cabrera got a standing ovation from the crowd, then he did a curtain call, which means he took off his helmet and bowed to the crowd.

I’m happy for Cabrera. He really deserves this moment.   This is one of the highlights of the 2021 season for Detroit. Hitting 500 career home runs is one of the hardest things to accomplish in baseball. Cabrera had 446 home runs at the end of 2016, when he hit 38. He hasn’t hit more than 16 home runs in a year since. Personally, I think the end might be near for Cabrera, as he is 38 years old and beginning to slow down. He had the Triple Crown in 2012 for leading the American League in home runs, runs batted in, and batting average.

He will probably fall short of getting 3,000 career hits this season, as he currently has 2,955, but he’s signed through 2023, so he should get it in early 2022. There have only been 32 players ever to get to 3,000 career hits, and only six players have hit 500 homers and 3,000 hits. Congratulations, Miguel.
