MLB Recap: All-Star Edition

The 2021 Major League Baseball season is on break, so here is a recap of the first half of the season. In May, batting averages were low and strikeouts were extremely high. The reason why was because of spider tacks. Spider tacks are a sticky, wax-like substance that was originally intended for professional powerlifters to enhance their grip, but it somehow found its way to baseball and has been mixed and cut down with other substances to provide a better grip and can increase a pitcher’s ability to amplify their spin rates on various pitches. The league decided to fix this by having umpires check on pitchers every now and then for spider tacks. Sit down before you read this. A pitcher pulled down their pants when the ump walked over to ( them) him!

Now for the team recaps. I will only be doing some teams, not all of them.

The Baltimore Orioles lost 20 straight games on the road at one point in the year, tying them with the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics for the 2nd-longest road losing streak in history.

The New York Yankees had a great run in May. People thought they’d be a sure-fire playoff team, but then they stumbled in June and ended the first half of the year by blowing a 7-2 lead to the Houston Astros.

The Toronto Blue Jays will be playing their games this year in Buffalo, New York. Maybe it’s the new home, but there have been lots of injuries on the squad.

Tony La Russa, the manager of the Chicago White Sox, has been controversial this year. In a game against the Minnesota Twins where the White Sox were up by 11 runs, Yermin Mercedes got a bad pitch thrown to him by the Twins. Mercedes launched it out of the park for a home run. La Russa said that Mercedes made a mistake and, “there will be a consequence he has to endure within our family.” In another game against the Cincinnati Reds, La Russa said that he didn’t know about the new extra-innings rule where teams have to put a man on second base to begin the extra inning. Despite his controversies, the White Sox are one of the best teams in the league.

The Royals were the best team at one point, but they have gone into a major skid. The Houston Astros are a very good team. The hitting has been very good, the pitching has been hot. They didn’t need cheating to win a World Series.
