Senate passes 1.9 trillion relief package

On Saturday, Mar. 6, the Senate passed a $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief package. This package includes many benefits for Americans, including $1,400 stimulus checks, $300 weekly for jobless people, child allowance of up to $3,600 for one year, and many more benefits. The Senate voted 50 – 49 to pass the bill, with all the Democrats voting yes, and all the Republicans voting no. There were only 99 votes because the Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska was absent from the meeting.

Even though this bill was already passed by the house, it will have to vote to pass the bill again. That is because the Senate made adjustments to the bill before passing it, as one of the Democrats, Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, refused to side with the rest of his party members unless there were some adjustments made to it. The House made the bill give $400 weekly, but the Senate reduced it to $300 weekly. The Senate also dropped the $15 minimum wage part of the bill.
