Texas Governor Greg Abbott lifted the mask mandate on Tuesday, March 2nd. This allows people to have the choice of whether they want to wear a mask or not. Though a mask is still recommended Texans have the choice. Texas’ daily covid numbers and hospitalizations have been trending down since January and about 7% of the population in Texas is vaccinated. So about 2 million people in Texas are vaccinated. A vaccine expert called Dr. Peter Hotez from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston thinks that the mask mandate has been lifted too soon.
Governor Abbott also stated that all businesses can open at 100% from next Wednesday. He also said that businesses can have the choice of putting their own rules of capacity and mask restrictions. Lots of people did not like the idea of no masks but other people disagreed. The House Speaker Dade Phelan said that the governor’s announcement was an “Important Step.”
