The Colosseum in Rome is getting a new floor

The Colosseum in Rome, Italy will get a new floor soon. It will be finished by 2023, and it will be “light, reversible and sustainable.” The Italian government started looking for people to build the floor last December, and now has decided to give a 18.5 million euro ($22.2 million) contract to a firm called Ingegneria. With this new floor, people will be able to go inside of the Colosseum and look at it. The floor was formerly removed towards the end of the 1800’s, by archaeologists to show the structures and tunnels underneath.

The floor will be made of Accoya wood, which will protect the structures and tunnels from rain. There will be a system that will control the temperature and the humidity of the structures and tunnels, and another machine will use the water load for the public bathrooms. The floor will be 3,000 square meters (32,300-square-foot). The goal is to make the Colosseum look like it used to be, and to preserve the structures and tunnels underneath.
