The New York City council has voted to ban natural gas usage.

New York City (NYC), the biggest city in the country based on population, has banned natural gas used in new buildings. This is to lower climate change, and it will take effect in 2023 for buildings smaller than 7 stories, and will take effect in 2027 for buildings over that. This bill must now be passed by the mayor. NYC was the sixth biggest user of natural gas in the country in 2019, but 29% and 11% of its electricity comes from Nuclear power and Electricity, respectively. This law will only affect new buildings, so people who already have gas heaters and stoves don’t need to follow this unless they move. Also, new hospitals, restaurants, and laundromats are excluded from the ban. This ban will lower 2.1 million tons of CO2 emissions, which is equal to about 450,000 cars.
