The US government will buy Covid-19 pills from the company Pfizer. Pfizer is one of the few companies that made a Covid vaccine approved for use in the US. The other 2 companies were Moderna and J&J. The US said that it will buy 10 million pills, for $5.3 billion. This move has to be approved by the FDA first, though. The pill is called Paxlovid, and Pfizer said that it lowers the risk of hospitalization and death by over 90% in people with mild to moderate infections. Even though Pfizer made a pill, another company also made a pill. That company is Merck, and the US has bought 1.7 million pills from them already. Pfizer also announced that they will let other people make their pills.
