The US has diplomatically boycotted the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. This is because the US does not want to support China’s human rights abuse in Xinjiang, China. The US will not be sending any official athletes to the Olympics, but has said that athletes can attend if they want, and they will be fully supported by the government. China has already announced that it will take countermeasures if a country boycotts it. The US boycotted the Olympics in 1980, when they were held in Moscow, Russia since the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan a year earlier. Both Democrats and Republicans are praising the boycott, as they feel China is doing bad things. Some of them want a full boycott of the Olympics, instead of this partial boycott.
