The UAE (United Arab Emirates) is using drones to try and create artificial rain. The country has heat waves going on, and so they are sending drones into the clouds and zapping the clouds with electricity. They think that this will artificially create rain. There are other types of artificially creating rain, or “cloud seeding”, but those other methods are not good for the environment, and they can be expensive and ineffective.
The US, China, India, and Thailand have all used cloud seeding before successfully. The US used cloud seeding to increase snowpack in Nevada and Wyoming. Water is a big problem in the UAE, because it needs groundwater for 2 ⁄ 3s of its water needs. It has low rainfall, high temperatures, and high surface water evaporation rates.
