The United States men’s soccer team won the 2021 CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America, and Carribean Association Football) Gold Cup, defeating Mexico in the final 1-0 in extra time. Miles Robinson scored the game-winning goal in the 117th minute. Kellyn Acosta got the assist. The game was held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, the crowd seemed to be mostly Mexican supporters.
In 2019, the US played Mexico in the Gold Cup Final. Coincidentally, Mexico won 1-0. The last time the US won the event was in 2017 when they beat Jamaica. This is huge for America after they missed the 2018 World Cup. The US were clear underdogs all over the world since Mexico had their best players on the pitch and the US didn’t. America had mostly Major League Soccer players on their team. Out of the 23 players on the Gold Cup roster for the US, 19 of those players were from the MLS.
Game summary: The U.S. had a chance to take the lead in the 25th minute when Sebastian Lletget passed to Paul Arriola, who had only the goalie in front of him, but his shot hit the post. Mexico had the ball more then America did, but couldn’t score, meaning the game was scoreless at halftime. Orbellin Pineda had two opportunities to put the Mexicans in front, but couldn’t capitalize on either one of them. Matthew Hoppe had two good chances to score deflected by the Mexican defense, and Paul Arriola had a shot on the doorstep, but the Mexican goalkeeper made an outstanding save. The game was still scoreless after 90 minutes, so it went into extra time. But in the 117th minute, Robinson scored to put the Americans in the lead for the rest of the game. The US had their 7th Gold Cup win, and their second win against Mexico in 2 months (they beat the Mexicans in the first-ever CONCACAF Nations League final on June 6).
